What Is “Internal Work” During a Rhinoplasty Or Nose Job?

A rhinoplasty at our Austin plastic surgery center generally has two basic components. The first is the external or outside of the nose and the second is the internal or inside of the nose. Usually the outside of the nose is manipulated to enhance the general appearance while the internal nose is changed to ensure normal breathing. Often work on both components is necessary for the best outcome.

The most common request for the external nose is a hump reduction or tip refinement. Most patients simply want their noses to be smaller and better shaped. Patients who have breathing problems can have internal anatomy that compromises the ability to pass air through the nose. The two most common issues are a crooked septum (midline structure of the nose) or enlarged turbinates (the air conditioning units of the nose). Seasonal allergies can contribute to the overall problem because internal swelling can obstruct breathing.

Go Into The Operating Room For A Nose Job Procedure

Each patient has unique anatomy that determines my plan for nasal enhancement. Patients who have breathing difficulty before their nose job often benefit from internal work so they have unobstructed breathing afterwards.

If you are considering a cosmetic rhinoplasty make sure your surgeon is comfortable with internal work so that you obtain the best result possible. The most common technical maneuvers performed internally are turbinate reduction, straightening of the septum and use of septal cartilage to graft the nose to optimize breathing. An ounce of prevention can make sure that your nose is not only pretty, but it works as Mother Nature intended.
