Neck liposuction is an effective, precise way to remove unwanted neck fat and restore a clean, youthful neck angle—without the complexity of a neck lift. In properly selected patients, this procedure delivers natural-looking, long-lasting results with minimal downtime and no visible scarring.
Neck liposuction is a surgical procedure designed to permanently remove excess fat from beneath the chin and along the neck to improve definition of the jawline and cervicomental (neck–chin) angle. It is best suited for patients with good skin elasticity, where fat—not loose skin or muscle laxity—is the primary cause of neck fullness.
At Westlake Plastic Surgery, neck liposuction is performed using local anesthesia in our fully accredited surgical facility. The procedure leaves no visible scars and is generally very well tolerated. Using refined liposuction techniques, unwanted fat is removed and sculpted to restore a cleaner, more defined neck angle. When performed in ideal candidates, the procedure produces natural-looking, long-lasting results with minimal downtime and very high patient satisfaction.
The neck is composed of multiple layers, including skin, fat, and underlying muscle. In patients with a full neck or poorly defined jawline, excess fat is often the primary contributor to loss of definition. Targeted fat removal alone can dramatically improve contour—without the need for more invasive procedures that manipulate deeper muscle or skin layers.
Ideal candidates typically have good skin elasticity, allowing the skin to naturally retract after fat removal. This quality is most commonly seen in younger patients, though age alone does not determine candidacy. Patients with significant skin laxity or visible neck banding may require more advanced surgical options to adequately address aging tissues.
Neck fullness often has a genetic component. If your parents or grandparents had a heavier or less defined neck, you may have inherited similar anatomy. While weight gain can contribute to neck fullness, patients who remain full despite being close to their ideal weight often benefit most from neck liposuction.
Skin quality is a critical factor. Firm, elastic skin snaps back after gentle stretching. In contrast, loose or hanging skin, visible vertical neck bands, or a history of significant weight loss may indicate reduced elasticity. Patients with a history of significant weight fluctuations may have compromised skin. These factors are carefully evaluated during consultation to determine whether liposuction alone will deliver an excellent result.
True facial liposuction is rarely performed due to its complexity and risk profile. Neck liposuction, however, is a very common and predictable procedure. Treatment may extend subtly into the jawline region to enhance definition, but liposuction above this level is uncommon and generally unnecessary.
A small incision is made discreetly beneath the chin. After local anesthesia and tumescent solution are applied—allowing for comfort, precision, and reduced bleeding—liposuction is performed to sculpt the neck and restore natural contours. Surgical judgment and experience are essential at this stage to avoid over- or under-treatment.
The procedure typically takes less than one hour. Patients return home the same day wearing a compression garment, which is worn continuously for the first 48 hours and then as much as possible over the following weeks. This helps control swelling and promotes optimal skin contraction.
Most patients resume normal daily activities within a few days. Improvement is visible immediately, with continued refinement over several weeks to months as swelling resolves. Pain is minimal, and satisfaction rates are exceptionally high.
When performed by an experienced surgeon, complications are uncommon. Expected temporary effects include swelling, bruising, and a sensation of tightness. Rare risks include hematoma, infection, seroma, nerve irritation, contour irregularities, or firm areas of healing tissue that may persist longer than desired.
Neck liposuction removes excess fat but does not change the underlying muscles, which means natural structures—especially the platysma—may become more visible once fullness is reduced. In some patients, this can reveal pre-existing neck bands or contours that were previously hidden, and additional treatments may be discussed when appropriate to achieve the most balanced result.
Neck liposuction offers a unique combination of safety, short recovery, and consistently high patient satisfaction—which is why it remains one of my favorite procedures when used in the right patient.
Neck liposuction is a powerful contouring procedure, but it is not a neck lift and should not be expected to correct loose skin, muscle banding, or advanced signs of aging. Its purpose is to remove excess fat and improve definition—not to tighten skin beyond its natural ability to retract.
Patients with good skin elasticity typically see dramatic improvement in neck shape and jawline definition. In patients with borderline skin quality, improvement is still common, but results may be more subtle and continue to evolve over several months as the skin gradually adapts.
Achieving patient satisfaction starts with realistic expectations. The transformation possible through neck liposuction depends heavily on three factors: the amount of fat present, its specific location, and—most importantly—your unique neck anatomy.
While many patients desire a "snatched" jawline, results vary based on what lies beneath the skin. Because this procedure focuses solely on contouring existing fat, the most dramatic and "exhilarating" results typically occur in patients with abundant fat, excellent skin elasticity, and standard underlying anatomy. If your neck fullness is primarily due to muscle structure rather than fat, liposuction alone may not achieve your specific vision.
Although neck liposuction is often described as a “small” or straightforward procedure, the margin for error is surprisingly narrow. The neck is an unforgiving anatomical area where over-treatment, under-treatment, or uneven fat removal can quickly lead to contour deformities, irregularities, or an unnatural appearance.
Achieving an elegant, natural neck contour requires an expert understanding of neck anatomy, aging patterns, and skin behavior—along with restraint and precision during fat removal. Inexperienced or overly aggressive techniques can result in hollowing, visible banding, or skin that fails to redrape smoothly.
In expert hands, neck liposuction is not about removing as much fat as possible—it is about sculpting just enough to restore definition while preserving harmony with the face. This judgment comes only from experience.
Non-surgical options such as fat-freezing, injectable treatments, and energy-based skin tightening technologies (including CoolSculpting, Kybella, FaceTite, Evoke, and Ultherapy) may offer modest improvement in select patients. However, these treatments rarely achieve the degree of contouring most patients seek.
One of the greatest advantages of neck liposuction is its reliability. It works—and patients are consistently happy with their results.
The fat cells removed during neck liposuction are permanently eliminated. As long as your weight remains stable, results are long-lasting and often permanent.
The procedure is performed through a tiny incision hidden beneath the chin. Once healed, the incision is typically imperceptible.
For most patients seeking meaningful contour improvement, neck liposuction provides more predictable, dramatic, and immediate results than non-surgical fat reduction treatments.
Most patients return to normal daily activities within a few days. Swelling improves steadily over several weeks, with continued refinement over a few months.
Neck liposuction is ideal when excess fat is the primary issue. Patients with loose skin or muscle banding may require a neck lift for optimal correction.
