Tuberous Breast Correction – 3 Months Post-Op
This patient is shown 3 months after surgery to correct her tuberous breast deformity, a condition also known as tubular breasts. Tuberous breasts are characterized by a narrow breast base, an elongated or constricted breast shape, and puffy, widened areolae that often protrude prominently. This is a congenital, inherited breast condition that can vary in severity and often affects both breasts, although sometimes one side is more pronounced.
Importantly, tuberous breast deformity is a benign condition—it is not linked to breast cancer or any other health concerns. However, many women seek surgical correction due to the physical appearance of the breasts and the limitations it places on clothing, confidence, and symmetry.
In this case, I performed a comprehensive correction that widened the breast base, improved volume with implants, and shaped the breasts to look more balanced and natural. The transformation is dramatic, and the patient is extremely happy with her results.
In some patients, I recommend a staged approach to achieve the best results. The first stage involves breast augmentation with implants to expand and reshape the breast. A second stage, performed months later, may include a breast lift (mastopexy) or areolar reduction to refine the appearance and address stretched or puffy areolas.
Surgeons must be cautious when combining a lift with augmentation in a single procedure, especially in tuberous breast patients. Both procedures create internal tension—tightening from the lift and outward pressure from the implant—which can increase the risk of areola distortion or spreading if not managed properly.
Postoperative care is also critical. I instruct my tuberous breast patients to perform regular breast massage and shaping, which helps expand the tight, fibrous tissue and minimizes scar contracture that is common in this condition.
