This patient had saline implants and one side deflated. I removed one intact 450cc implant and the other deflated implant. Her breasts look just fine with an obvious loss of superior fullness and overall size but a result that pleases her very much.
Saline implants are the easiest to remove as a deflation just results in the body taking up the saline fluid while silicone implants may need more of a “cleaning out” of the breast implant pocket to ensure complete removal of the silicone filler.
Removal of the implant capsule or scar around the implant is a much more extensive procedure requiring full anesthesia and more time and risk for bleeding and hematoma formation. Drains are typically used in such cases.
Determining the need for a breast lift after implant removal requires surgeon experience and extensive discussions with the patient to ensure the final result is what is desired. A breast lift can be done at the same time as implant removal (1 operation) or as a secondary procedure months to years later (2 operations) if desired. It’s always comforting to have options!
