This patient underwent bilateral breast implant removal with an immediate breast lift. This has become an increasingly common request from women who chose larger implants earlier in life but, with time, pregnancies, weight changes, and the natural aging process, find that their breasts have become larger, heavier, less comfortable, and no longer reflect the look they desire.
Implant removal alone can produce an excellent result in women with smaller breasts, minimal sagging, and good skin elasticity. However, when larger breasts are associated with significant ptosis (sagging), an immediate breast lift is usually recommended to remove excess skin, reposition the nipple-areola complexes, and restore a more youthful, natural breast shape.
Many women considering implant removal also ask about Breast Implant Illness (BII). BII is a term used to describe a collection of symptoms that some women attribute to their breast implants, including fatigue, brain fog, joint and muscle pain, headaches, and other nonspecific symptoms. At present, there is no definitive test for BII, and the medical community continues to study the condition to better understand its cause and its relationship to breast implants.
Although the scientific evidence is still evolving, many women report meaningful improvement in their symptoms after implant removal. Others notice little or no change. For this reason, it is important to approach surgery with realistic expectations while understanding that implant removal may improve both the appearance of the breasts and, for some women, their overall sense of well-being.
Every woman's situation is unique. Whether the motivation is cosmetic, physical discomfort, concerns about implant longevity, or the possibility of Breast Implant Illness, the decision to remove breast implants should be individualized and based on thoughtful discussion, careful examination, and the best available scientific evidence.
