Breast Implants, Scars, and Social Media: Separating Fear from Facts

The Internet Knows Everything. Your Surgeon Knows You.

One of the biggest changes I've witnessed over the past three decades isn't a new implant, a new surgical technique, or a new technology.

It's the patient who walks into my office.

Years ago, patients came with questions. Today, many arrive with fears.

They have spent weeks—or months—reading forums, watching videos, scrolling social media, and consuming thousands of opinions from people they have never met. By the time they sit down in my consultation room, they often know every possible complication, every worst-case scenario, and every horror story imaginable.

What they don't know is how likely any of those things are to happen to them.

This is especially true with breast surgery.

Women worry that their scars will be obvious forever. They fear that breast implants inevitably cause illness. They become convinced that every wrinkle, every sensation, or every normal part of healing represents a complication.

The internet rarely provides perspective.

A patient with a normal recovery usually moves on with her life. A patient who is frightened, disappointed, or angry often writes about it repeatedly. Social media naturally amplifies uncommon experiences because dramatic stories attract attention.

As surgeons, we see something very different.

We see thousands of patients over decades.

We know that scars mature over many months—not weeks. We know that meticulous surgical technique, proper incision placement, and diligent scar care allow the overwhelming majority of women to heal with scars that become increasingly difficult to notice over time. We also know that breast implants remain among the most extensively studied medical devices available, while recognizing that no operation is completely without risk and that every patient deserves an individualized discussion of those risks.

Perhaps the most important part of my consultation is helping patients distinguish between possibility and probability.

Yes, complications can occur.

No, they are not the expected outcome.

My job is not to convince someone to have surgery. It is to educate them, answer every question honestly, and replace uncertainty with understanding. Sometimes that conversation ends with surgery. Sometimes it ends with the recommendation not to operate.

Either outcome is a success if the patient leaves informed rather than frightened.

The internet is an extraordinary resource for education. It is a poor substitute for experience.
