Patient Details
This patient is several months after neck liposuction performed under local anesthesia in my office operating facility. Through a tiny incision hidden beneath the chin, I am able to precisely remove excess fat and sculpt the neck and jawline. It is a well-tolerated procedure with a relatively brief recovery, and the improvement is noticeable immediately, with continued refinement as healing progresses.
I only wish you could see her in person. The standardized photography I use in my office tends to flatten the natural shadows that define the neck and jawline, making the improvement appear more subtle than it truly is. In person, the transformation is striking. Her neck angle is dramatically improved, her jawline is now well defined, and the overall effect is a younger, lighter, and more elegant facial profile.
The key to an excellent result is proper patient selection. Neck liposuction is ideal for patients whose primary problem is excess fat and who still have good skin elasticity—skin that has the ability to contract after the fat is removed. Think of youthful skin that "snaps back" after being stretched.
However, when the neck fullness is accompanied by loose, hanging skin, prominent platysmal bands, or significant age-related laxity, liposuction alone is not the answer. Removing fat in those patients can actually accentuate the loose skin. Instead, they are better served with an open neck lift, which allows me to tighten the underlying muscles, remove excess skin when necessary, and restore a youthful neck contour.
Choosing the correct operation is every bit as important as performing the operation well. The best results come from matching the procedure to the anatomy rather than trying to make one operation fit every patient.
