This patient is 4 months out from gynecomastia treatment surgery . He has done well with treatment but developed some wider scars at the areola border that I treated with an injection of steroids.
Scar enlargement is more commonly seen in people of color. Darker skin equals a higher frequency of spread scars. Overall it is not common (less than 1% of patients). It’s not something they patients will ask me about but if I see it I will note it and treat it. Asian patients are also at higher risk as well. Caring for your suture line so no crusting develops and using silicone scar strips for several MONTHS work to keep the scar fine and almost invisible. Make the effort, take the time and you will be rewarded!
