Recovering from Gynecomastia Surgery

Gynecomastia surgery recovery essentially takes two days. There will be some discomfort for weeks afterwards, but this can easily be tolerated and patients can generally resume life activities after two days. This may be hard to believe that something that has caused so much angst in your life has such a short recovery time but, yes, it’s true.

I recommend that you avoid chest exercise for about two weeks after surgery. Low intensity exercise can usually be started after five to seven days. If a drain it used, it is removed within 2-5 days. In most cases, sutures do not need to be removed Bruising and swelling can persist for two to three weeks after surgery (but will not be noticeable under clothing).

Most healing occurs in the first five weeks after surgery, and it can take up to one and a half years for all the healing to be complete. Compression garments are worn for four weeks. Tissue massage and the use of a “roller” device help to reduce scarring and ensure a smooth contour.
