Take it from a seasoned plastic surgeon with a specialty in gynecomastia, otherwise known as “man boobs”: life comes at you fast and in the blink of an eye, much of it can slip away before you have taken in the very best of life. School, kids, work and responsibilities can end up consuming all your time and energy. Having a debilitating medical condition makes things worse.
Gynecomastia, known as “man boobs” because of the appearance of female-like breasts in men, is a common condition that affects millions of men across the globe. It is a benign condition, causing no harm to those who have it, other than the mental consequences. Gynecomastia most certainly can and does ruin the quality of life of those who have it, driving some to the point of mental illness.
The good news for those who suffer from gynecomastia is that it is a treatable condition. Gynecomastia surgeons can contour the chest area to make it look manly, the way it is supposed to appear. The problem is that this involves a procedure, and most people try to avoid that. Many believe that a special diet can improve gynecomastia, or that focused exercise will shape up their chest. People take pills all the time for various medical conditions so certainly there must be a pill to take away gynecomastia, right?
Unfortunately, diet, exercise and pills will do nothing to change the appearance of gynecomastia. This is FACT. Why else would I perform over 200 cases of gynecomastia surgery every year if my patients can resort to non-surgical alternatives to obtain the best result? I would be practicing unethical medicine—exposing patients to inherent (albeit minor) risks of complications related to treatment. That is not my intention. More importantly, you are wasting valuable time in delaying treatment of a condition that is directly responsible for your reduced quality of life. When was the last time you took your shirt off in public? How tired are you of picking out shirts that hide your gynecomastia? How do you feel when you are made fun of by others? What about the stares you get from others? All the lost opportunities because of your gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia negatively impacts men’s quality of life. Nothing could be worse than not living a happy life to the fullest. The only way to do that is to get your gynecomastia fixed so you can face the world as the man you know you are, not the one who lives in the shadow of gynecomastia. Life is short, live it the way you choose.
