Common Questions About Rhinoplasty Surgery

How much swelling occurs with a rhinoplasty?

Dr. Caridi’s Answer:

Swelling can be seen in the midface area after surgery. Most of the significant swelling will go downafter five to seven days.  Sleep with the head of your bed elevated and apply ice to reduce bruising and swelling.

When will I feel comfortable going into public after a rhinoplasty?

Dr. Caridi’s Answer:

Most Westlake Plastic Surgery patients feel they can go back into the public eye one to two weeks after surgery. Bruising is not uncommon and it may last up to two weeks. Makeup is a great tool to get back into the swing of things more quickly after your rhinoplasty.

Will people know that I had rhinoplasty surgery on my nose?

Dr. Caridi’s Answer:

In most cases, people won’t be able to tell you had rhinoplasty surgery, but they may note that something “looks different.” A well-performed rhinoplasty results in a nose that simply looks like a nose better than the original.

When can I get back to exercising after a rhinoplasty?

Dr. Caridi’s Answer:

I suggest patients ease back into exercise after two weeks. They can do some light walking sooner, but activity that increases heart rate should be avoided for two weeks.

What kind of result can I expect from rhinoplasty surgery?

Dr. Caridi’s Answer:

Most patients desire improvements to the nasal tip and the “shaving” of a hump on the nose. Many patients prefer a smaller, more balanced, “finer” nose. Expectations like these will show after surgery.

Do you offer digital imaging at Westlake Plastic Surgery?

Dr. Caridi’s Answer:

Yes, it’s a great way to visualize changes to expect after a rhinoplasty. The images are not exact though, so patients need to understand that computer imaging is different than actual nasal results.

What type of anesthesia is used for my rhinoplasty?

Dr. Caridi’s Answer:

A full rhinoplasty is best performed under general anesthesia, which is safe and does not result in any pain, discomfort, or awareness of the surgery. If something simpler like tip work were needed, local
anesthesia or IV sedation would be used.

How much does rhinoplasty surgery cost?

Dr. Caridi’s Answer:

Exact cost depends on your nasal anatomy and the complexity of your case. The average cost is around $7,500 with a range between $6,500 and $9,500. These are ball-park numbers though, and actual cost
varies among patients.

How long does rhinoplasty surgery typically take?

Dr. Caridi’s Answer:

Most rhinoplasty surgeries last about one to two hours.

Is a rhinoplasty an outpatient procedure?

Dr. Caridi’s Answer:

Yes. Patients go home about an hour after surgery.

Do I need special care after my rhinoplasty surgery?

Dr. Caridi’s Answer:

Someone would need to stay with you the day of the procedure if general or IV sedation anesthesia was used.

What do I need to do after my rhinoplasty surgery to care for my nose?

Dr. Caridi’s Answer:

Relaxation is most important during recovery. Ice your nose regularly for the first two days, keep your head elevated, don’t exercise to get your blood pressure up, and just relax.

My family and friends don’t think I need to have my nose worked on. Why do I want it fixed?

Dr. Caridi’s Answer:

This is not uncommon. All noses are fine if they allow you to breathe, but when your nose makes you unhappy, and you have features that you perceive as unflattering, you can consider making changes for yourself.

I have some difficulty breathing through my nose. Would rhinoplasty surgery help with this?

Dr. Caridi’s Answer:

This is an important consideration in all rhinoplasties. Often, work needs to be performed internally to help ensure the best breathing after rhinoplasty. Cartilage grafts are often used on the nose to make sure the framework of the nose is sturdy, and making the nose smaller does not compromise breathing.

How can I make sure that I will be happy after my rhinoplasty surgery?

Dr. Caridi’s Answer:

Go to a reputable, highly qualified plastic surgeon. There are no guarantees about happiness after surgery, but good psychological health and realistic expectations are important.
